Why these sewer pipe manufacturers moved to steel fibers

In recent years, Belgian and Dutch sewer pipe manufacturers have all moved from traditional reinforcement to steel fiber reinforcement. Why is that?

The challenge

Precast sewer pipe manufacturers in the Netherlands and Belgium have been looking for ways to speed up production and improve profitability. Reinforcing sewer pipes with steel mesh or rebar is a timeconsuming process: involving the design, construction and storage of cages, and then the installation of these cages within the formwork. Sustainability is also becoming an increasing issue with governments purchasing sewer pipes.

The solution

Most have now moved to Dramix® steel fiber reinforcement for their precast sewer pipes instead of steel mesh and rebar. Production time is approximately halved, and as the use of steel fiber is less labor-intensive, employees can be transferred to other tasks. Dramix® 3D 65/40 is used for the smaller sewer pipes, and Dramix® 3D 80/60 for the larger diameter and thicker-walled sewer pipes. Galvanized steel fibers are a solution for those manufacturers who do not want to bother sorting types of (un)galvanized pipes. As some customers ask for galvanized fibers yet want to avoid having to manufacture and store two different types of sewer pipes (galvanized and ungalvanized), all these manufacturers only use galvanized Dramix® steel fiber. Finally, Dramix® steel fibers for concrete reinforcement contain up to 50-75% less steel in weight, and also lead to the use of less concrete. Together these can result in CO2 emissions reductions of up to 25-50% per project.
